My inlaws own a cabin in the sleepy town of Arnold. Down the hill from Calaveras Big Trees State Park and Bear Valley Ski Resort, Arnold is probably most notable for the burger shack and the well stocked market easily accessible from highway 4.
My family know and love Arnold for the Lakemont Pines community and the president of the Lakemont Pines Association, my father-in-law. We have been visiting the cabin for over 10 years and it wasn’t until recently that we discovered the abundance of outdoor adventure: mountain biking trails, rock climbing, hiking, fishing and 4-wheeling. The town is nestled between the Mokelumne and Stanislaus Rivers, so there is no shortage of secluded swimming holes to stumble upon.
Our most recent visit to Arnold brought us to this family owned fruit stand. My in-laws always talked about the fresh fruit they pick up there but we had never even see the place! Tucked behind a strawberry patch, the stand is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. The property grows their own blueberries, strawberries, zucchini, tomatoes, stone fruits and carries local wines, honey, nuts and jams. The small bakery also sells assorted pies, pastries and sandwiches.
If you look at the journey as part of your whole experience, you will find that the memories start before you reach your destination. Next time you are traveling, slow down and enjoy the sights along the way.
